What is Minimally Invasive Surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery involves performing procedures through small incisions using specialised instruments and advanced imaging technology. Where traditional “open” surgery might require a large cut and significant soft tissue disruption, MIS techniques are designed to limit trauma to the body.

The results?

  • Less post-operative pain
  • Reduced risk of infection and complications
  • Shorter hospital stays—sometimes none at all
  • Faster return to work, sport, and daily activities

Key Innovations Driving MIS

Several technologies are pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve with minimally invasive techniques:

  • Robotic-Assisted Joint Replacement: Using robotics, we can perform hip and knee replacements with pinpoint accuracy, improving implant alignment and joint longevity while reducing the trauma of surgery.
  • Endoscopic Spine Surgery: Once associated with long and painful recoveries, many spinal procedures—such as discectomies or spinal decompression—can now be done through a keyhole approach, using a camera and micro-instruments.
  • Arthroscopy for Sports Injuries: For common issues like ACL tears or rotator cuff injuries, arthroscopy allows surgeons to repair damaged tissue through tiny incisions, often as a day procedure.
  • Biologic Therapies (e.g., PRP): Sometimes, the best approach isn’t surgical at all. We’re increasingly using Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy—derived from the patient’s own blood—to promote natural healing in tendons and joints, often as part of a minimally invasive care plan.

Is MIS Right for Everyone?

While minimally invasive techniques offer tremendous benefits, they aren’t a blanket solution for all cases. Patient selection is crucial.

At my practice, we assess each patient’s anatomy, health status, and surgical goals to determine the best approach. For example, MIS is often ideal for:

  • Joint replacements in younger or active patients
  • Herniated discs causing nerve symptoms
  • Early-stage joint degeneration or ligament injuries

However, some conditions—such as severe deformities, complex fractures, or advanced arthritis—may still benefit from traditional open surgery, which remains a reliable and well-understood option with decades of data behind it.

What About Foot and Ankle MIS?

One particularly exciting frontier is minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery. This includes procedures like bunion correction or heel realignment through micro-incisions. But it’s worth noting that the foot has unique challenges: lower blood supply and delicate nerve structures.

That’s why we proceed cautiously, using MIS where the benefits clearly outweigh the risks, and ensuring every patient fully understands the pros, cons, and expected outcomes.

The Road Ahead: Smarter Surgery, Better Recovery

Minimally invasive surgery represents a philosophy shift in orthopaedics: from “fixing” to preserving, from long recoveries to early mobilisation, and from one-size-fits-all to precision and personalisation.
