2. Learn Correct Landing Technique
One of the most important ways to protect the ACL is to learn how to jump and land correctly. Athletes should aim to:
- Land softly
- Keep the knees slightly bent
- Keep the knees aligned over the toes
- Avoid allowing the knees to collapse inward
Coaches often describe this as “landing like a feather”.
3. Strengthen the Core and Legs
Strong muscles around the hips, thighs and core provide stability to the knee joint and reduce strain on the ACL. Exercises that are especially beneficial include:
- Squats
- Lunges
- Romanian deadlifts
- Planks
- Hip bridges
- Single leg exercises
Hamstring strength is particularly important because the hamstrings help prevent the shin bone from sliding too far forward, which protects the ACL.
4. Improve Balance and Coordination
Balance training improves body awareness and helps athletes react safely during sudden movements. Simple exercises such as standing on one leg, balance board training or single leg reaches can significantly improve stability.
Better balance often translates into better control during sport.
5. Include Agility and Plyometric Training
Agility drills help athletes practise safe cutting and direction changing techniques. Plyometric exercises such as jumping drills teach athletes how to generate power while maintaining good form.
The focus should always be on quality of movement rather than speed alone.
6. Avoid Excessive Fatigue
Many ACL injuries occur late in games or training sessions when muscles are tired and technique becomes sloppy. Adequate rest, recovery and sleep are essential for injury prevention.
Athletes should avoid overtraining and ensure they have enough recovery time between intense sessions.
Parents and Coaches Play a Vital Role
Young athletes often rely on coaches and parents to guide their training habits. Encouraging proper warm ups, strength programmes and safe movement patterns from an early age can greatly reduce injury risk.
Importantly, injury prevention programmes should become a routine part of training rather than something only done after an injury occurs.
ACL injuries remain one of the most serious setbacks in sport, but they are not always unavoidable. By focusing on proper technique, strength, balance, agility and recovery, athletes can significantly reduce their risk of injury while improving overall performance.
